Panda's Food

Giant pandas in the wild will eat 99% bamboo. They will sometimes eat other grasses like wild tubers or meat like birds or rodents.

In the zoo, the giant panda might be fed honey, eggs, fish, yams, shrub leaves, oranges or bananas along with some prepared food.

Pandas are dying more and more from bamboo being cleared. The Chinese government is saving the pandas by keeping some bamboo forests from being cut down.

Panda Habitats

Most pandas live in a forest and near bamboo. Mostly in the high mountains of Western China. The pandas used to live in the whole area of the light green on the above map. And now the only survivors live in the tiny red areas in the middle of the map.

Panda Babies

Panda babies are born the length of a pencil and are pink with a few hairs. They weigh about the same as a stick of butter. If a panda has twins it is rare for both to survive.

Newborn pandas are not toys. They are delicate, pink and beautiful animals.

A panda baby is blind when it's born and it starts to see when it's three months old.

Like human babies, giant panda babies sleep a lot because most of their energy goes to growing bigger and stronger.

Help!

Pandas are in grave danger.

People like us are cutting down bamboo.

The fate of these amazing animals is now in our hands. Pandas are starting to disappear. We must do something fast.

If pandas lose bamboo, we will lose pandas!

If pandas pass away, what will happen? What will we do? Will we lose pandas forever?
